If you were raised by a narcissistic dad, your nervous system might be feeling triggered. Mine definitely is.

Trump makes me want to drink because drinking was one of the ways I rebelled against my narcissistic dad. My dad didn’t drink, which made drinking all the more alluring. He claimed moral superiority over those addicted to substances. Which left my jaw on the ground when I learned his own grandfather and uncle were both alcoholics. Never a mention of this did he make. He did go out of his way to let me know he believed my maternal grandfather was a highly functional alcoholic.

Anyway, Trump makes me want to drink. Because that’s how I said f*ck you to my authoritarian dad and his moral high ground when I was a teenager. And Trump reminds me of my authoritarian dad.

Trouble is, I’ve already been through this. Not only did I drink to rebel against my dad, I also drank to rebel against my ex. I know where the drinking leads me. It just gives the authoritarian dick leverage to sham…
